Individuals – Additional Info
Domestic flights should be arranged to Durban, whilst international flights should be arranged to Johannesburg. Assistance will be provided for road transfers from either Durban (3.5-4 hours) or Johannesburg (5-6 hours) at the time of booking. Ideally, every effort will be made to dovetail the arrival of volunteers on a Monday so that the cost of the road transfer can be shared.
Summer (October to April) is considered the wet season and is characterised by hot humid days and afternoon rains. Average summer temperatures range from 18°C to 31°C. Winter (May to September) is the dry season and is characterised by pleasant days and very little rain. Average winter temperatures range from 11°C to 26°C, although early mornings can get rather chilly.
Special diets are catered for whenever possible. However, due to the remoteness of the location, some food substitutes may need to be brought from home, or a supplemental charge may be requested. There are no shops while on the programme so please bring any snacks or extras with you.
This will be provided at the time of booking to assist with the dilemma of what to bring. Clothes are climate dependent but the general rule is to layer and ‘keep it neutral’. You will be living in the bush so it is best to blend in!
HEALTH & MEDICAL
All participants should obtain their own medical advice prior to arrival and are required to have medical insurance in the case of an emergency. Somkhanda is considered malaria-free, but please consult a physician.
There is no wifi at the tented camp nor electricity in the tents. However, there are electrical points in the communal area for charging the essentials.
This programme will incorporate the daily activities of the team that you will be working with, including a contribution to conservation projects, participating in research and engaging in community activities. A key aspect of your stay will be participating in the monitoring of wildlife species and collecting data with conservation partners. Not only does this contribute to research, but it gives you an ideal opportunity to observe wildlife in their natural habitat. Depending on the time of the year, volunteer activities are usually conducted in the early mornings and late afternoons in order to escape the midday heat. Lunch is a time to relax at your leisure, often spent near the swimming pool!
INTERNATIONAL BORDER REQUIREMENTS
All international travellers require a passport that is valid for at least six months from date of entry. Anyone under the age of 18 requires additional documentation that Y4C will assist with. Depending on your country of origin, please investigate visa requirements.
