School Groups – Additional Info
Travel
For Southern African school groups, domestic flights to Durban will be arranged when required. Land transfers will be organised to the Camps from Durban (3.5-4 hours) and Johannesburg (5-6 hours). For international school groups, flights to Johannesburg are recommended, with land transfers organised to the Camps (5-6 hours).
CLIMATE
Summer (October to April) is considered the wet season and is characterised by hot humid days and afternoon rains. Average summer temperatures range from 18°C to 35°C. Winter (May to September) is the dry season and is characterised by pleasant days and very little rain. Average winter temperatures range from 11°C to 26°C, although early mornings can get very chilly.
DIETARY NEEDS
Special diets are catered for whenever possible. However, due to the remoteness of the location, some food substitutes may need to be brought from home, or a supplemental charge may be requested. There are no shops while on the programme so please bring any snacks or extras with you.
PACKING LIST
This will be provided at the time of booking to assist with the dilemma of what to bring. Clothes are climate dependent but the general rule is to layer and ‘keep it neutral’. You will be living in the bush so it is best to blend in!
HEALTH & MEDICAL
All participants should obtain their own medical advice prior to arrival and are required to have medical insurance in the case of an emergency. Camps are considered malaria-free, but please consult a physician.
ELECTRICITY
There is no wifi at the Camps nor electricity in the tents. However, there are electrical points in the communal areas for charging the essentials.
ITINERARY
This programme can be developed to suit the needs and interests of each group. For those with a particular desire to give back, to contribute to school service requirements and to obtain a sense of achievement, volunteer activities will be a main focus that will include conservation projects, research and community activities.
For those groups that want to focus on discovery, a greater emphasis will be placed on building an awareness and appreciation of our wild places, including learning bush skills, participating in nature-based adventures and learning about life on a reserve.
All groups will participate in the monitoring of wildlife species, have the opportunity to engage with local communities, undertake bush walks, sleep outs and learn about the intricacies of wildlife conservation. We are happy to work with you to develop an itinerary that is both meaningful and impactful.
INTERNATIONAL BORDER REQUIREMENTS
All international travellers require a passport that is valid for at least six months from date of entry.
Anyone under the age of 18 requires additional documentation that Y4C will assist with. Depending on your country of origin, please investigate visa requirements.
